Hotels in Avignon: Where to Stay in the City

Updated 26 June 2026 · 322 real hotels

In short, Where to stay in Avignon?

Most visitors to Avignon should stay inside or just outside the ramparts, in the Centre-ville, to walk to the Palais des Papes, the Pont Saint-Bénézet and the vibrant Place de l'Horloge. Budget travellers can look at the southern suburb of Montfavet for lower prices with easy bus or car access to the old town.

Avignon sits on the east bank of the Rhône in the heart of Provence, enclosed by one of the best-preserved medieval city walls in Europe. Its golden-stone streets, world-class papal heritage and lively café culture make it a compelling base for exploring the Luberon, the Pont du Gard and the Alpilles — all within an hour's drive.

The city divides neatly into the walled historic core, which rewards guests who want to walk everywhere and soak up the atmosphere after the day-trippers leave, and a wider urban area that suits drivers or those seeking more space for less money. Because Avignon is both a year-round cultural destination and the host of one of Europe's biggest theatre festivals every July, accommodation fills quickly and prices spike seasonally — choosing the right neighbourhood and booking timing matters here more than in many French cities.

Which area to stay in Avignon?

  • Centre-ville (intra-muros): The first choice for most travellers. Everything worth seeing — the Palais des Papes, the Rocher des Doms gardens, the covered market and the festival venues — is walkable. Hotels range from budget three-stars to palatial five-star addresses.
  • Around the Palais des Papes: The tightest, most atmospheric pocket of the city centre, ideal for first-time visitors who want to step out of the door and be immersed in medieval Avignon immediately.
  • Place de l'Horloge / Rue de la République corridor: The commercial spine of the old town, lined with restaurants and shops. Practical for those who prioritise convenience and nightlife access over quietness.
  • Montfavet (southern suburb): A residential area about 5 km south-east of the ramparts. Significantly calmer and cheaper than the centre, best suited to drivers or visitors attending events at the nearby Parc des Expositions.
  • Villeneuve-lès-Avignon (across the Rhône, Gard side): Technically a separate commune but only minutes away by bus or on foot via the Daladier bridge. Offers a quieter, less touristy base with its own medieval fort and abbey, and often lower room rates.
  • Orange / Northern outskirts (20+ km): For travellers with a car who are covering a wider Provence itinerary and simply sleeping near Avignon rather than in it. Rates are lower but the old town requires a dedicated drive.

Good to know

  • Book early for July: The Festival d'Avignon (first three weeks of July) is one of the largest performing-arts festivals in the world. Hotels inside the walls sell out months in advance and prices can double or triple. If you are not attending the festival, avoid this window or book at least 3–4 months ahead.
  • Arrive by TGV if you can: Avignon has two train stations. The TGV station (Avignon TGV) is 4 km south-east of the old town and served by a shuttle bus; the Centre station is right beside the ramparts and far more convenient for intra-muros hotels. Check which station your service uses before booking a hotel.
  • Cars are largely unnecessary inside the walls: The historic centre is compact and partly pedestrianised. If you rent a car for Provence day trips, look for a hotel with private parking or a nearby public car park — street parking inside the ramparts is very limited.
  • Shoulder season is the sweet spot: April–June and September–October offer pleasant Provençal weather (typically 18–26 °C), manageable crowds and better room availability. August is hot and busy; winter is quiet but some restaurants and attractions reduce their hours.
  • Watch the mistral: Avignon sits in the Rhône valley and is one of the cities most exposed to the mistral, a strong north-westerly wind that can arrive with little warning especially in spring and autumn. It rarely cancels plans but pack a layer even on sunny days.

What to know about hotels in Avignon?

What is the best area to stay in Avignon?+

The Centre-ville inside the medieval ramparts is the best all-round choice: you can walk to every major monument and the atmosphere after dark is far more lively than the suburbs. If your budget is tighter or you are travelling by car, Montfavet to the south-east offers decent connections to the old town at lower price points.

How do I get from Avignon TGV station to the city centre?+

A dedicated shuttle bus (navette TGV) runs between Avignon TGV and the Centre station beside the old town walls; the journey takes about 10 minutes and departs in sync with most train arrivals. Taxis and ride-hail services are also available outside the station. The Centre train station, used by regional TER services, is already at the edge of the ramparts and requires no transfer.

What is the average hotel budget for a night in Avignon?+

Based on current availability, you can find a comfortable three-star room inside or near the walls from around 77–94 € per night, while four-star hotels in the centre sit around 130 €. Five-star options range from 220 € up to 702 € per night for the most prestigious address in the city. Prices climb sharply during the July festival and major long weekends.

When is the best time of year to visit Avignon?+

Late spring (May–June) and early autumn (September–October) offer the most balanced experience: warm Provençal weather, open restaurants and museums, and reasonable hotel rates. July is spectacular if you are attending the festival but extremely crowded and expensive. August is the hottest month and also sees heavy tourist traffic throughout Provence.

Is it worth staying inside the city walls rather than outside?+

Yes, for most travellers. The intra-muros area is compact enough to explore entirely on foot, and staying inside the walls means you experience the city once the day-trip crowds have left — the narrow streets and squares take on a very different, more intimate character in the evening. If you have a car and are primarily using Avignon as a base for wider Provence exploration, an out-of-town hotel with parking and easy road access can make practical sense.
