Hotels in Arles: Where to Stay in 2025

Arles sits at the gateway between Provence and the Camargue, where the Rhône slows and the light turns that particular shade of gold that made painters migrate here for centuries. A UNESCO World Heritage city, it holds a Roman arena still used for bullfights and concerts, medieval cloisters, and narrow limestone streets that have changed little in outline since antiquity. The Van Gogh Foundation draws art travellers, the Rencontres de la Photographie fills the city every July, and the Camargue wetlands begin almost at the southern edge of town.

Staying in Arles means choosing between two very different rhythms. The compact historic centre puts every monument on foot, with lively café terraces and the Saturday morning market on the Boulevard des Lices. The surrounding countryside, from the Alpilles hills to the north to the flat Camargue plains to the south, offers farmhouse stays and pool-side silence just 10 to 20 kilometres from the same monuments. Both options are genuinely worthwhile, and your choice depends mainly on whether you came to absorb a living Roman city or to exhale in Provençal landscape.

• City Centre (Centre-ville): The default choice for monument-focused stays. Hotels cluster near the arènes, Place du Forum and the old town. You walk to everything, restaurants are plentiful, and the evening atmosphere is warm. Hôtel du Cloître, L'Arlatan and Hotel Spa Le Calendal are all based here, ranging from 159 to 183 euros per night.
• Trinquetaille: The neighbourhood directly across the Rhône via the pedestrian bridge. Quieter and more residential than the centre, with good local cafés and slightly lower ambient noise at night. A comfortable ten-minute walk from the main sites.
• Les Alyscamps edge (South-east centre): The southern fringe of the old town near the ancient necropolis avenue of Alyscamps. Calmer than the Forum area, still walkable to all sights, and popular with visitors who prefer to avoid the busiest tourist streets.
• The Alpilles countryside (10-20 km north): The limestone ridge of the Alpilles begins north of Arles toward Les Baux and Maussane-les-Alpilles. Properties here are typically Provençal mas or hotel-estates with pools and gardens. Benvengudo (14 km, 144 euros/night), Mas de l'Oulivié (13.7 km, 272 euros/night) and Hôtel Terriciaë (18.2 km, 148 euros/night) represent this category. A car is essential.
• Camargue fringe (South of Arles): The flat, reed-lined southern approach toward Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer. Fewer hotels, more gîtes and equestrian estates. The landscape is dramatic and the birdwatching exceptional, but you are committing to a rural, car-dependent stay.
• Périphérie Arles (edge of town): Properties like Mas Petit Fourchon (127 euros/night, perfect 5/5 score) and Résidence Club Odalys Les Gardians (66 euros/night) sit on the outskirts of Arles proper. They offer more space and quieter surroundings while remaining closer to the city than the full Alpilles retreat.

• Book early for July: The Rencontres Internationales de la Photographie runs through the entire month of July and fills Arles well in advance. Centre-ville rooms sell out fastest. Aim to book at least two to three months ahead for any July stay.
• A car is optional in the centre, essential elsewhere: The historic centre is compact and walkable, and the train station is a ten-minute walk from the arena. However, if you plan to visit Les Baux-de-Provence, the Camargue or the Alpilles villages, a rental car is the only practical option. No reliable public bus network covers those routes.
• Arrive by train if you can: Arles has a direct TGV connection from Paris Gare de Lyon (roughly four hours) and frequent regional trains from Marseille (under an hour) and Nîmes (twenty minutes). Parking in the centre is constrained and can add friction to an otherwise smooth arrival.
• Spring and autumn offer the most comfortable visit: May-June and September-October give you warm temperatures (18 to 26 degrees), smaller crowds than peak summer and better rates on most properties. Mid-July to mid-August is the hottest (often above 35 degrees) and the most expensive period.
• Marseille-Provence (MRS) is the nearest major airport: Located about 70 kilometres east of Arles, it connects to the city via a shuttle bus to Marseille Saint-Charles station followed by a regional train, or directly by rental car on the A54 motorway. Budget roughly 80 to 100 minutes for the full journey by public transport.
