Watching the sun set from the Rocher des Doms gardens, with the Rhône and the Pont Saint-Bénézet laid out below, is one of the simplest and most memorable things a couple can do in Avignon at no cost. Wine tasting in the surrounding Côtes du Rhône villages, such as Châteauneuf-du-Pape a short drive away, makes for an easy and pleasurable half-day. Boat trips along the Rhône operate seasonally and offer a different perspective on the city's silhouette. For an indoor moment, the Palais des Papes itself, one of the largest Gothic palaces in the world, is genuinely impressive and best explored at a leisurely pace with an audio guide.

Temperatures are warm but not overwhelming, terraces are open, and the city is busy enough to feel vibrant without the intense crowds of high summer. July in particular brings the famous Festival d'Avignon, which transforms the city into a hub of theatre and performance: culturally exciting, but also considerably more crowded and expensive. Winter is quiet and mild by northern European standards, with a softer, more contemplative atmosphere that some couples find appealing.
