The city divides naturally between its animated pedestrian core around Place Drouet d'Erlon, the quieter cathedral and museum quarter just to the north, and the outer residential and business zones where budget hotels cluster near the motorway and TGV station at Bezannes. Getting your neighbourhood right makes a significant difference: staying central means champagne caves, fine dining, and monuments are all on foot; staying in the outskirts saves money but costs time.

• Centre Erlon: The social and commercial heart of Reims. Place Drouet d'Erlon is lined with cafés, brasseries, and shops. Best for first-time visitors who want everything walkable — cathedral, champagne houses, markets, and nightlife.
• Cathedral Quarter (Centre-Ville): Immediately around the Notre-Dame Cathedral and the Palais du Tau. Quieter in the evenings, ideal for culture-focused travellers and those who want a more historic, less commercial atmosphere.
• Clairmarais: A residential neighbourhood just east of the city centre, bordering a small lake and park. Low-key, local feel; a short walk or quick tram ride from the cathedral and main sights.
• Bezannes: A suburb southwest of the city, home to the Reims-Champagne TGV station and several business-oriented hotels. Practical for day-trippers arriving by high-speed train or for travellers with a car, but lacks urban character.
• Reims Nord / Bétheny: Northern outskirts, accessible by tram. Very affordable accommodation, suited to budget travellers or those simply using Reims as a sleeping base while touring the wider Champagne region by car.

• Use the tram network: Reims has two efficient tram lines (A and B) linking the outskirts to the city centre in under 15 minutes. If you stay in Bezannes or Bétheny, factor in a transport pass — single tickets are inexpensive and day passes are available.
• Book early for the grandes fêtes: The Reims Jazz Festival in late May and the Saint-Rémi festivities in September fill hotels quickly. The Christmas market period in December is also high demand for a small city — reserve at least six to eight weeks ahead.
• Champagne house visits require reservations: Most prestigious maisons (Taittinger, Veuve Clicquot, Pommery) require advance booking for cellar tours. Plan these before you arrive, not the morning of.
• Weekends vs. weekdays: Because Reims attracts many Parisian weekenders, Friday-Saturday nights can be noticeably pricier than Sunday-to-Thursday stays. If your schedule is flexible, a mid-week visit often means better rates and quieter sights.
• Best seasons: Late spring (April–June) and early autumn (September–October) offer the most pleasant weather and the spectacle of the champagne harvest. Avoid August if you dislike heat; the city can be quiet but temperatures in the enclosed cathedral square can be intense.
