Our hotel profiles in Montreux
Why Montreux rewards a careful hotel choice
Montreux sits on a narrow strip of land between Lake Geneva and the steep foothills of the Vaud Alps, which means geography matters more here than in most Swiss cities. The town stretches along a single curved promenade, and the difference between a hotel that faces the lake and one tucked a block inland can change the entire feel of your stay. Prices reflect that reality: lakefront rooms command a clear premium, even at three-star properties.
Beyond the scenery, Montreux has genuine substance. It is home to one of Europe's most respected music festivals each July, a Christmas market that draws visitors from across the region in December, and the Lavaux UNESCO vineyard terraces just a few minutes away by train or boat. The mild microclimate, sheltered by the Alps to the north and east, means palm trees actually grow along the quay, and the shoulder seasons (April-May and September-October) are often as pleasant as midsummer.
Which area to stay in Montreux?
- City Centre (lakefront promenade): The right choice for most travellers. Hotels here sit within a short walk of the train station, the Casino Barrière, the Jazz Festival stages, and the main boat pier. All eight hotels in our current availability are located here, ranging from the affordable Hôtel Bon Port and J5 Hotels Helvetie Montreux to the five-star Royal Plaza Montreux.
- Old Town (Vieille Ville): The hillside quarter above the main boulevard, laced with narrow streets, a covered market and the Saint-Vincent church. Quieter at night than the promenade, and a short downhill walk to the lake. Good for travellers who prefer local atmosphere over a lake view.
- Territet: A peaceful residential sub-district immediately south of the centre, closer to Château de Chillon. Slightly removed from the festival crowds, with direct lake views and a local train stop on the Simplon line.
- Clarens: The western neighbour of Montreux, connected by a flat lakeside path and by regional train in under five minutes. More residential, lower prices, popular with longer-stay visitors who want a quieter base.
- Les Avants (above Montreux): A mountain village reachable by the heritage MOB panoramic railway. Suited to walkers and those who want alpine air without driving. Not practical if you plan to spend most time in the town itself.
- Veytaux (near Château de Chillon): A handful of lodging options close to Montreux's most-visited monument. Ideal if the château is your main reason for visiting, though you will need the bus or a bike to reach the town centre easily.
Good to know
- Book early for July: The Montreux Jazz Festival (first two weeks of July) fills the town months in advance. Rates across the centre rise sharply. If the festival is not your goal, this is the period to avoid, or at minimum to book six months ahead.
- Use the lake boats: CGN boats connect Montreux with Lausanne, Vevey and the château. If you are also visiting Geneva or Lausanne, a regional boat pass can be better value than multiple train tickets and adds scenery the train misses.
- Walk or take the train inside the agglomeration: The promenade between Clarens and Territet is completely flat and safe to walk. Regional trains run every few minutes and stop at Montreux, Territet and Veytaux-Chillon, so you rarely need a taxi.
- Check what the hotel rate includes: Several Montreux hotels provide a Riviera Card to guests, which covers free public transport in the area (including mountain railways up to Rochers-de-Naye). Confirm with your property before purchasing separate passes.
- Pack for variable weather: Even in summer the lake can produce sudden thunderstorms rolling in from the French Alps. A light waterproof layer is useful from March through October. Winters are mild by Swiss standards but the hills above town can receive snow while the promenade stays clear.
What to know about hotels in Montreux?
What is the best area to stay in Montreux?+
The city centre lakefront is the most convenient base for almost all visitors. It keeps you within walking distance of the train station, boat piers, restaurants and the main festival venues. If you want peace and quiet without sacrificing lake access, Territet or Clarens are worthwhile alternatives a few minutes away by regional train.
When is the best time to visit Montreux?+
Late spring (May to early June) and early autumn (September to October) offer mild weather, smaller crowds and lower hotel rates than peak summer. July brings the Jazz Festival and a lively atmosphere but also the highest prices of the year. December is popular for the Christmas market and has a genuine charm, though some boat services are reduced.
How much does a hotel in Montreux typically cost per night?+
Based on current availability, three-star options start around 148-150 EUR per night (Hôtel Bon Port, J5 Hotels Helvetie Montreux), four-star hotels sit between 219 and 238 EUR (Hotel Eden Palace Au Lac, La Villa), and five-star properties such as the Royal Plaza Montreux come in at 254 EUR. The Grand Hotel Suisse Majestic, Autograph Collection is listed at 326 EUR per night. Rates climb significantly during the Jazz Festival.
How do you get from Geneva Airport to Montreux?+
The most practical option is the direct train from Geneva Airport station (Genève Aéroport) to Montreux, which runs with one or no changes and takes roughly 70-80 minutes depending on the service. Trains depart frequently and the journey is comfortable. A taxi or private transfer takes a similar time but costs considerably more, especially in traffic.
Is Montreux a good base for day trips?+
Yes. Lausanne is 20 minutes by train and connects to the rest of Switzerland. Château de Chillon is a ten-minute bus or train ride. The Lavaux vineyard terraces (UNESCO heritage) are accessible by boat or regional train in under 30 minutes. The MOB panoramic railway from Montreux station reaches Gstaad and the Bernese Oberland, making it possible to combine a lakeside stay with a mountain excursion on the same trip.
