Lausanne is one of Switzerland's most dynamic mid-sized cities, built on three hills that tumble down to the northern shore of Lake Geneva. It is home to the International Olympic Committee, a world-class university, and a restaurant scene that punches well above its size. Getting around requires some effort because the city is genuinely steep, but the Metro M2 connects the lake at Ouchy straight up to the main train station and beyond in under ten minutes.

Staying here means you are also well-placed for day trips: Geneva is 45 minutes by train, Montreux and the Lavaux wine terraces (a UNESCO World Heritage landscape) are 20 to 30 minutes east. The city rewards slow exploration on foot through the medieval Cité quarter, along the covered stairways called escaliers, and into the lively Flon district with its galleries and nightlife.

• City Centre (Centre-Ville): The practical base for most visitors. You are steps from the Gothic cathedral, the Place de la Palud market square, and the Flon district. Hotels like the Lausanne Palace (5-star, 502 €/night), Hotel Continental (4-star, 178 €/night), ibis Lausanne Centre (3-star, 268 €/night), and Hotel Victoria (4-star, 250 €/night) give a wide range of budgets here.
• Ouchy: The lakeside quarter at the bottom of the metro line. The atmosphere shifts to promenades, pleasure boats, and palace hotels. Château d'Ouchy (4.5-star, 395 €/night) and Beau-Rivage Palace (5-star, 604 €/night) sit directly on the waterfront. Ideal for those who want the Lake Geneva postcard experience.
• Flon: A former industrial district now filled with concept stores, restaurants, clubs, and creative agencies. No large hotels sit here, but it is 5 minutes on foot from the central hotel cluster. Best suited to younger travelers and nightlife seekers.
• Sallaz-Vennes: A quieter residential zone on the eastern edge of the city, home to the Aquatis Hotel (4-star, 237 €/night), which is attached to the largest aquarium-vivarium in Europe. A good pick for families or travelers arriving by car who want easy parking.
• Vallon-Béthusy: A calm, largely residential area slightly uphill from the centre. The Hôtel des Patients (3.5-star, 257 €/night) serves a more local clientele including medical visitors to the nearby university hospital. Quiet nights, genuine neighborhood feel, less tourist traffic.

• Use the Metro M2 as your main reference point: This single automated metro line runs from Ouchy (lakefront) through the train station (Gare CFF) up to Croisettes in about 15 minutes. All central hotels are within walking distance of a M2 stop. If your hotel is not, check bus connections before booking.
• Book early for spring and summer: Lausanne hosts numerous international congresses, IOC sessions, and the Montreux Jazz Festival draws overflow visitors. Hotel rates spike from May through September. Shoulder months of March-April and October offer better prices without losing much daylight.
• Factor in Lausanne's hills: A hotel that looks close to a destination on a flat map may involve a steep climb. Check elevation and whether a nearby metro stop or bus line bridges the gap. This is particularly relevant for Ouchy-to-Centre movements.
• Airport transfers: Geneva Airport (GVA) is the closest international hub, roughly 50 minutes by direct train from Lausanne train station. Zürich Airport (ZRH) is about 2h20 by train. There is no significant advantage to flying into Zürich unless your onward journey goes east.
• Validate your transport pass: Most Lausanne hotels include a free public transport pass (Lausanne Transport Card) valid during your stay. Confirm this at check-in as it covers metro, buses, and some regional lines, saving meaningful money over several days.
