• Old Town (Vieille Ville): Built on a hill on the left bank of the Rhône, the Old Town is the historic heart of Geneva. Staying here means cobblestone streets, the St. Pierre Cathedral, and a quieter, more residential atmosphere at night. Accommodation options are fewer but the setting is hard to match for first-time visitors.
• Eaux-Vives: A residential neighborhood on the left bank, between the Old Town and the lake. It is popular with locals for its restaurants and bars, and it sits close to the Bains des Pâquis beach and the Jet d'Eau. A good choice for travelers who want a slightly less touristy experience.
• Champel: A leafy, upscale residential district on higher ground to the south of the Old Town. Quieter and more residential, it suits travelers who prefer calm surroundings and do not mind a short tram ride into the center.
• Carouge: Technically a separate municipality directly south of Geneva, Carouge has a Sardinian-influenced architecture and a bohemian, village-like atmosphere. Its café terraces and independent shops make it a pleasant base for visitors who want character over convenience.
• Rive / Plainpalais: The right mix of student energy and cultural institutions, this area on the left bank near the university and the MAMCO contemporary art museum appeals to younger travelers and culture-focused visitors. Prices for food and drink tend to be slightly more accessible here.

• Take advantage of the Geneva Transport Card: Most hotels and hostels in the city issue guests a free public transport pass valid for the duration of their stay. Trams, buses, and even boats on the lake are included, so you rarely need to pay for a taxi to get around.
• Book well in advance for international conference periods: Geneva hosts major UN sessions, trade fairs at Palexpo, and events like the Geneva Motor Show. During these periods, room rates rise sharply and availability drops fast, even for modest hotels.
• Consider the shoulder seasons for the best value: Late April through early June and September through October offer mild weather, fewer crowds, and more competitive rates than the summer peak or the December watch and jewelry fair season.
• Cross into France for lower dining costs: The French border is minutes away by tram (line 18 reaches Annemasse), and restaurants just across the border can cost significantly less for a similar quality meal. Many Geneva residents do their grocery shopping there for the same reason.
• Pack layers for lake weather: Geneva's microclimate means warm afternoons can turn cool quickly, especially near the water. Even in summer, an extra layer for evenings on the lake promenade is genuinely useful.
