Évora is one of the Iberian Peninsula's most intact medieval cities, a UNESCO World Heritage Site where a Roman temple, a Gothic cathedral and a rather sobering Chapel of Bones coexist within a ring of ancient walls. The city sits at the heart of the Alentejo, Portugal's vast southern interior, and it carries the unhurried rhythm that defines the region: long lunches of black pork and migas, cork oaks stretching across terracotta plains, and evenings that cool quickly under an extraordinary sky.

Staying here means choosing between two distinct experiences. Inside the walls, you are immersed in centuries of layered history, with convents converted into hotels and cobbled lanes connecting monument to monument. Outside the walls, converted quintas and rural retreats offer privacy, swimming pools and direct contact with Alentejo farmland, usually only a short drive from the city gate. Neither choice is wrong; it simply depends on whether you want the city at your doorstep or the countryside as your backdrop.

• São Mamede, Sé, São Pedro and Santo Antão (Historic Centre): The best base for first-time visitors. This area sits inside the Roman walls and places you steps from the Temple of Diana, the cathedral, Praça do Giraldo and the city's best restaurants. Walkability is excellent and the atmosphere is genuinely historic without feeling like a museum piece.
• Bacelo and Senhora da Saúde: A residential district just east of the walls, practical and well connected by road. It suits travellers arriving by car or those who prefer a quieter, more local neighbourhood feel with easy access to the centre.
• Malagueira and Horta das Figueiras: Located to the southwest of the historic core, this area is more modern and residential. It works well for travellers who prioritise space and comfort over proximity to monuments, and it connects smoothly to the main road network.
• Canaviais: A semi-rural zone north of the city, home to converted estate properties. The setting is peaceful, with open countryside views, and suits couples or travellers who want a retreat atmosphere combined with occasional trips into the city.
• Nossa Senhora de Machede and Nossa Senhora da Tourega: These rural parishes sit further out in the Alentejo countryside, offering genuine farmland immersion. Properties here typically have their own grounds, pools and a strong sense of place. A rental car is essential.

• Hire a car if you plan to explore the Alentejo: Évora itself is walkable, but the surrounding region including the megaliths of Almendres, the walled village of Monsaraz and the vineyards of the Alentejo wine route all require your own transport. Train connections from Lisbon exist but onward travel from Évora station is limited.
• Book early for spring and autumn: April to June and September to October are the most comfortable months to visit, with mild temperatures and lower crowds than the Alentejo summer. These shoulder seasons fill hotels quickly, especially for weekend stays.
• Avoid the peak summer heat if possible: July and August temperatures regularly exceed 38°C in the interior. If you do visit in summer, prioritise hotels with air conditioning and a pool, and plan outdoor sightseeing for early morning or evening.
• The historic centre is compact but hilly: The walled city covers roughly one square kilometre and is navigable on foot, though some lanes involve uneven cobblestones and gentle gradients. Staying inside the walls eliminates the need for taxis or buses to reach the main sights.
• Combine Évora with a longer Alentejo itinerary: The city pairs naturally with Beja, Estremoz and the wine estates around Reguengos de Monsaraz. A two or three night base in Évora gives you enough time to absorb the city and make at least two day trips into the wider region.
