The coastline alternates between calm, sheltered bays and wind-scoured ocean beaches facing the open Atlantic, so no matter how you prefer to spend a beach day, the right stretch of sand is close.

The town is also a practical base for the wider Lisbon Coast. The Sintra-Cascais Natural Park begins at the western edge of town, Estoril is a ten-minute walk along the seafront promenade, and Lisbon itself is 40 minutes away by train. Accommodation here skews toward four and five stars, reflecting both the real-estate values and the clientele that has been coming to the Estoril Coast for generations. If you are looking for honest luxury at a coastal scale rather than a big-city hotel tower, Cascais consistently delivers.

• Cascais Town Center: The best all-round choice for most visitors. The marina, Praia da Rainha, the pedestrian shopping streets, and the historic Citadel are all within easy walking distance. Hotel Baia (from 224 EUR/night) sits directly on the bay here, and the five-star Albatroz Hotel (from 441 EUR/night) occupies a converted 19th-century palace on the rocks above Praia da Rainha.
• Cascais Clifftop and Boca do Inferno: The coastal road west of the center leads to dramatic cliffs and the famous Boca do Inferno blowhole. The Farol Hotel (from 314 EUR/night) is positioned here on a former lighthouse estate, combining a design-forward interior with one of the best sea-view pools on the coast. Good for couples and those who prefer a quieter setting with taxi or rideshare access to town.
• Estoril: Immediately east of Cascais, walkable via the seafront promenade or a short train hop. Travelers who want to split time between UNESCO-listed Sintra and the coast sometimes base themselves in Cascais and day-trip, which is entirely feasible in under an hour each way.

• Use the Cascais-Lisbon train line freely. Trains run every 20 minutes, take roughly 40 minutes to Lisbon Cais do Sodré, and cost around 2 to 3 EUR each way. Staying in Cascais does not mean sacrificing access to Lisbon; it means trading urban noise for sea air and a real Portuguese town pace.
• Book well ahead for July and August. The Estoril Coast is popular with Portuguese families, Spanish visitors, and international tourists simultaneously during peak summer. Hotel rates climb and availability in Cascais proper shrinks fast. Shoulder season (May, June, September, October) offers better prices, lighter crowds, and genuinely pleasant Atlantic temperatures.
• Rent a bike for the coastal path. The seafront promenade between Cascais and Estoril is flat, paved, and bike-friendly. Several rental points operate near the marina. It is the most practical and enjoyable way to move between the two towns without a car.
• A car is useful but not essential in town. For the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park, Guincho Beach, and the hill villages inland, a rental car or rideshare opens up the area considerably. Parking in central Cascais is limited and can be expensive in high season, so if you plan to stay mostly in town and Estoril, public transport covers most needs.
• Pack a layer even in summer. The Atlantic influence means evenings can turn cool and mornings are often overcast before clearing by midday. Locals call it the nortada, a persistent northerly wind that keeps temperatures lower than coastal destinations further south. Light layers are useful even in July.
