The city is compact enough to explore entirely on foot once you are inside the walls, and it connects easily by train to Perugia, Spoleto, and Rome.

• Historic Centre (Centro Storico): The obvious choice for first-time visitors and pilgrims. You are steps from the Basilica of Saint Francis, the Basilica of Santa Chiara, and the Roman Temple of Minerva. Streets are steep and largely car-free, so expect to walk with your luggage from the nearest parking area or bus stop.
• Santa Maria degli Angeli: The flat modern town at the foot of the hill, built around the monumental Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli. It has the main train station, easier car access, more parking, and several larger hotels with pools. A local bus connects it to the walled city in roughly 15 minutes.
• Piazza del Comune area: The civic heart of the historic centre, surrounded by medieval towers and the Roman temple facade. Staying close to this square gives you central access to restaurants, shops, and the main uphill path toward the Basilica of Saint Francis.
• Perugia (18 km): The Umbrian regional capital works as a base if you want a city with a wider range of restaurants, nightlife, and cultural events. From Perugia you can reach Assisi by regional train in around 25 minutes.
• Bevagna and the Umbrian countryside (15 to 20 km): Agriturismo-style stays or boutique wine estates in the valley below Assisi offer peace, local food, and easy day-trip access to the city by car. This suits travelers combining Assisi with the broader Umbrian wine and food route.

• Arrive by train if you can: The regional line connecting Florence, Perugia, Assisi, Foligno, and Spoleto is reliable and scenic. From Rome Termini, change at Foligno; the total journey takes around two and a half hours. The station is in Santa Maria degli Angeli, not inside the walls.
• Book early for Easter and the Calendimaggio festival: Assisi draws large crowds during Holy Week, the Feast of Saint Francis in early October, and the Calendimaggio medieval festival in May. Rooms in the historic centre fill weeks in advance during these periods.
• Driving into the historic centre requires a permit: Most of the walled city is a ZTL (restricted traffic zone). If you arrive by car, use the designated car parks outside the walls (Piazza Giovanni Paolo II is the largest) and take the escalator system or a shuttle bus up into the city.
• Shoulder season offers the best balance: April to early June and September to October bring mild temperatures, fewer tour groups during the week, and the countryside at its most photogenic. July and August are crowded and hot, though evenings cool down significantly at altitude.
• Pack comfortable shoes with grip: Assisi's streets are paved with polished stone that becomes slippery after rain. Flat-soled walking shoes or light hiking shoes are far more practical than smooth-soled footwear.
