Rimini sits on the northeastern Italian coast where the Adriatic meets the Po Valley flatlands, and it manages to be two cities at once. The resort side is loud, colourful and unapologetically commercial: 15 kilometres of sandy beach lined with stabilimenti (private beach clubs), pedal boats, and aperitivo bars that stay open well past midnight. The historic side, tucked a short walk inland, holds a Roman triumphal arch, a Renaissance temple designed by Alberti, and a medieval town square that most beach tourists never bother to find.

What makes Rimini genuinely interesting as a destination is precisely that contrast. You can spend a morning at the Tempio Malatestiano, eat a plate of piadina at a market stall, and be back on a sunlounger by early afternoon. The city rewards visitors who treat it as more than a beach stop, and choosing the right neighbourhood is the first step toward getting the balance right.

• Marina Centre: The beating heart of the Rimini seafront. Hotels, restaurants, clubs and the Gran Viale pedestrian promenade are all concentrated here. Best for first-time visitors, nightlife lovers and anyone who wants maximum convenience without a car.
• Rivazzurra: A quieter residential-resort strip south of Marina Centre, still well served by buses. The pace drops noticeably, the beach is slightly less crowded, and prices follow suit. Good for budget travellers who prefer a calmer evening.
• Miramare: The southernmost end of the Rimini coast before Riccione begins. Noticeably more relaxed, with a slightly higher proportion of Italian families over international party crowds. A few spa hotels cater to couples looking for a low-key Adriatic break.
• Historic Centre (Borgo San Giuliano and Piazza Cavour area): Rimini's old town, walkable from the sea but culturally a world away. Fewer hotels exist here, but staying inland means Roman ruins, authentic trattorias and a local rhythm. Worth considering for travellers who care more about culture than beach access.
• Bellariva: Sits between Marina Centre and Rivazzurra. A family-friendly micro-zone with wide beaches and a gentler nightlife scene. Practical for those travelling with children who still want easy access to the main strip.

• Use the bus, not a taxi: Rimini's Line 11 runs the entire coastal strip from Rivazzurra north to the city centre and back. Tickets are cheap, frequency is good in summer, and the route covers virtually every hotel on the seafront. Renting a bicycle is equally practical on flat terrain.
• Book early for July and August: The Adriatic coast is one of Italy's busiest domestic holiday destinations. Hotels in Marina Centre and Miramare fill up weeks in advance during peak summer. Shoulder season (May, June, September) offers better rates, thinner crowds and sea temperatures that are still entirely swimmable.
• Check what the beach club costs separately: Most Rimini hotels quote room rates that do not include beach access. A daily or weekly stabilimento pass (sunlounger plus umbrella) is an additional cost. Ask the hotel which club they are affiliated with and what the fee is before booking.
• Rimini train station is genuinely central: The station sits between the historic centre and the seafront, roughly ten minutes on foot from the beach. Trains connect directly to Bologna (about one hour), which in turn links to the rest of Italy and to Bologna Guglielmo Marconi Airport. Federico Fellini International Airport is closer but has more limited connections.
• Respect the shoulder hours: August afternoons can be intensely hot on the coast. Locals structure the day around an early beach session, a proper lunch break, and a return to the water or promenade in the late afternoon. Fighting this rhythm is uncomfortable; following it is not.
