A city of around 150,000 people in the Gard department, it holds some of the best-preserved Roman monuments in the world, including an amphitheatre still used for concerts and bullfights, a near-intact temple from the 1st century BC, and the remarkable Jardins de la Fontaine. The city sits at the edge of the Camargue wetlands, a short drive from the Pont du Gard aqueduct, and roughly halfway between Marseille and Montpellier on the TGV line. It rewards visitors who slow down and look closely.

Staying in Nîmes means choosing between a genuinely walkable historic core and a handful of surrounding options that trade convenience for price or space. The city is compact enough that the centre is almost always the right answer, especially for a short stay. Summers are hot and festive, spring and autumn are ideal for sightseeing, and even winter carries a Mediterranean lightness that most northern European cities cannot match.

• Centre-ville (Historic Core): The obvious first choice for anyone visiting for the monuments. The Arènes, Maison Carrée, and the main shopping streets are all on foot. Hotels here tend to be higher-end, and the atmosphere in the evenings is lively without being overwhelming.
• Quartier Administrations: Directly adjacent to the historic centre, this area is slightly calmer and more residential in character. It hosts several well-rated apartment-hotels, making it a smart pick for longer stays or families who want kitchen access and extra space.
• Gare de Nîmes (Route d'Arles): The area around the railway station is practical rather than picturesque. It is ideal for early arrivals, late departures, or travellers using Nîmes as a base to day-trip to Montpellier, Avignon, or the Pont du Gard by train. Budget options concentrate here.
• Pont du Gard area (surroundings, approx. 20 km): Staying near the famous aqueduct makes sense if you plan to hike the gorges or visit the site at dawn before the crowds. Bear in mind you will need a car to get around comfortably from here.
• Lunel / Montpellier Est corridor (approx. 24 km): A practical option for road travellers passing through or combining a Nîmes visit with Montpellier. Not recommended if the Roman monuments are your primary reason for the trip, as you will lose time commuting.

• Book the centre early for festival weekends: The Feria de Nîmes (Pentecost and September) fills the city completely. Prices rise sharply and even peripheral hotels sell out weeks in advance. If your dates overlap, book as soon as possible.
• A car is not needed in the centre but is useful for day trips: The Pont du Gard, Camargue, and the Cévennes foothills are all reachable within an hour. Nîmes also has a tram line linking the station to the centre, so you can arrive by TGV and stay car-free.
• Visit the monuments early or late: In July and August, midday temperatures regularly exceed 35°C. The Arènes and Jardins de la Fontaine are far more pleasant before 10 a.m. or after 5 p.m. Plan your hotel check-in accordingly.
• Nîmes airport is small but connected: Ryanair and a few other carriers serve it seasonally. The airport sits about 10 km south-east of the centre and is reachable by shuttle bus or taxi in roughly 20 minutes.
• Choose an apartment-hotel for stays of three nights or more: Several properties in the Quartier Administrations offer kitchenette-equipped studios, which lets you pick up produce at the covered market (Les Halles) and save on meals during a longer visit.
