Today the capital of La Gomera retains that unhurried harbor atmosphere, with a compact old quarter, black-sand beaches nearby, and a ferry terminal linking the island to Tenerife in under an hour. It is a practical, pleasant place to settle in, and most of the island's highlights are reachable by local bus or rental car within 30 to 45 minutes.

La Gomera itself is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, known for the ancient laurel forest of Garajonay, the whistled language Silbo Gomero, and dramatic ravines (barrancos) that carve the island into distinct micro-climates. Staying in the capital gives you the ferry link and the town's modest but genuine charm, while staying in Hermigua or the southern coast around Laguna de Santiago puts you closer to lush valleys or quieter beaches. The island rewards slow travel, so think carefully about what you want to wake up to each morning.

• San Sebastián de La Gomera (town center): Best for first-time visitors and travelers arriving by ferry. The historic center, the church of the Asunción, local restaurants and the main beach are all walkable. Hotels here include options at every budget level.
• Hermigua (north, approx. 11 km): A fertile green valley with banana plantations and a relaxed village atmosphere. Good base for hiking the northern trails and for travelers who want rural character without being too isolated.
• Laguna de Santiago and Playa de Santiago (south coast): The sunniest part of the island, drier and warmer than the north. Suits beach-oriented travelers and those who prefer a resort-style setting away from the capital bustle.
• Las Hayas and the interior highlands: Remote, forested and very quiet. Ideal for hikers who want immediate access to Garajonay National Park. Accommodation is sparse and budget-friendly, suited to independent travelers comfortable with minimal services.
• Valle Gran Rey (west coast): A popular destination for long-stay visitors, known for its dramatic ravine setting and bohemian atmosphere. Not listed in current availability but worth considering if you plan to rent an apartment for a week or more.

• Get a rental car or plan bus routes before you arrive. La Gomera has a public bus network (GUAGUAS Gomera) that connects the main villages, but services are infrequent, especially on Sundays. A car gives you real freedom to explore the barrancos and forest roads.
• Book the ferry from Tenerife in advance during peak season. The Fred Olsen and Naviera Armas ferries from Los Cristianos (Tenerife Sur) fill up quickly in July, August and during Semana Santa. The crossing takes roughly 40 to 50 minutes.
• Travel in spring (March to May) for hiking. The laurel forest is at its most atmospheric after winter rains, trails are not crowded, and temperatures are mild across the whole island. July and August are warm but busier and drier at lower elevations.
• Pack layers even in summer. The north of the island, including Hermigua and the Garajonay plateau, can be cloudy and cool while the south is sunny. The micro-climate difference within 15 km can be striking.
• Validate your budget expectations early. The island has relatively few hotels, which limits competition. Prices at the better-rated properties rise quickly in high season, so booking two to three weeks ahead for stays between June and September is a sensible reflex.
