Mérida is one of the most archaeologically rich cities in Spain. Founded as Emerita Augusta by the Romans in 25 BC, it preserves an exceptional concentration of ancient monuments: a theater, an amphitheater, a circus, multiple temples, and two Roman bridges still standing over the Guadiana River. UNESCO recognized this heritage in 1993, making Mérida a World Heritage Site. It is a compact city of around 60,000 inhabitants in the Extremadura region, easy to navigate on foot once you are based in the center.

The pace of life here is distinctly Extremaduran: unhurried, warm, and tied to the land. Summers are intense, with temperatures regularly exceeding 38°C, while spring and autumn offer ideal conditions for outdoor exploration. The city's famous Festival Internacional de Teatro Clásico, held each July and August in the Roman theater, draws visitors from across Europe. Outside festival season, crowds thin out considerably, and the monuments feel almost entirely yours.

• Old Town (Vieille ville): The clear first choice for first-time visitors. The Roman theater, amphitheater, Temple of Diana, and the Alcazaba are all within a short walk. The area has the best concentration of hotels, tapas bars, and restaurants. Ideal for travelers without a car who want to experience everything on foot.
• Bellavista: A modern residential district south of the center. Quieter than the old town, with local shops and a more everyday feel. A good option for travelers seeking slightly lower prices while remaining close to the historic core. The AZZ Mérida Medea hotel is located here.
• Around the Guadiana Riverbanks: The area bordering the river offers pleasant evening walks along the Roman bridge and is very close to the old town. Some accommodations and guesthouses are found in this transitional zone between the historic center and quieter streets.
• Northern Outskirts and Carretera de Madrid corridor: Where larger hotels with parking facilities tend to be located. Practical for road-trippers and those traveling with families or heavy luggage. Less atmospheric but well connected to the center by car or local bus.
• Centro Comercial and Avenida de Extremadura area: A transitional zone between the old town and modern Mérida. More everyday commercial activity, with supermarkets, pharmacies, and local services. Useful for longer stays or those wanting a balance between convenience and proximity to monuments.

• Book early for July and August: The Festival Internacional de Teatro Clásico runs through these two months and fills hotels across the city quickly. Prices rise noticeably during festival weeks, so reserving two to three months in advance is advisable.
• Stay in the Old Town if this is your first visit: The monuments close relatively early in the evening (most archaeological sites shut by 7 or 9 PM depending on season), and being within walking distance means you can visit at opening time before tour groups arrive.
• Getting from the train and bus station to the center: Both the train station and the main bus station are located a short distance from the old town, roughly 10 to 15 minutes on foot or a few minutes by taxi. There is no metro; local buses connect the stations to the center.
• Renting a car is not necessary inside the city, but it is highly useful if you plan to visit the wider Extremadura region (Cáceres, Trujillo, the Monfragüe National Park). Street parking in the old town can be limited; hotels with private parking are a practical advantage.
• Avoid midsummer midday heat: Plan monument visits for early morning or late afternoon. Many sites close for a midday break in summer. Carrying water and choosing a hotel with air conditioning is essential from June through September.
