Staying here feels unhurried. The city is compact enough to explore on foot, yet large enough (around 150,000 inhabitants) to have real restaurants, a working art-museum scene and reliable transport links. Whether you arrive for the carnival, a Lusitanian road trip or a business visit to the regional capital of Extremadura, choosing the right neighborhood makes a tangible difference to your experience.

• Casco Antiguo (Old Town): The first choice for first-time visitors. The Alcazaba, the cathedral and the Museum of Fine Arts are all here, and the network of narrow streets fills with locals every evening for the paseo. Hotels and apartments in this zone put you at the heart of Badajoz without needing a car.
• City Center / Avenida de Huelva axis: The commercial spine of modern Badajoz. Shopping streets, the covered market and most of the 4-star business hotels sit in this zone. A good base if you need easy access to train and bus connections or are combining the city with a broader Extremadura road trip.
• Ronda del Pilar / Valdepasillas: A quiet residential district south of the center, popular with travelers who want lower noise levels and easier parking. Well connected to the center by city bus.
• Cerro de Reyes: A largely residential area on the northern fringe, relevant mainly if you are attending events at the Recinto Ferial (exhibition grounds). Less convenient for pure sightseeing but quieter and practical for long-stay visitors.
• Guadiana Riverfront: The riverside promenade is one of the most pleasant evening walks in the city. A handful of accommodation options near this area combine scenic surroundings with proximity to the historic bridges and the Portuguese border crossing.

• Getting in from the airport: Badajoz Airport (BJZ) is roughly 15 km east of the city. Taxis are the most practical option since scheduled bus services are limited. If you fly into Lisbon or Seville instead, both are reachable by coach in under three hours, and coaches drop you close to the city center.
• Best time to visit: Spring (March to May) and early autumn (September to October) offer mild temperatures ideal for walking the old town. July and August regularly exceed 40 C, so if you visit in summer, plan outdoor sightseeing for early morning. The February carnival is spectacular but books out months in advance.
• Getting around the city: The Casco Antiguo is largely walkable. The city bus network is affordable and covers the main residential districts. If you plan day trips to Merida (60 km north) or Caceres (90 km north), renting a car from the city center is straightforward.
• Booking timing for carnival: The Badajoz Carnival (usually late January or February) is the busiest and most expensive period of the year. Book accommodation at least two to three months ahead and expect prices significantly above normal rates.
• Cash and language: Badajoz is a working Spanish city, not a heavily touristed one. While card payment is widely accepted, carrying some cash for traditional tapas bars and smaller shops is sensible. English is spoken in hotels but much less so in everyday commerce, so a few phrases of Spanish help.
