Hotels in Dubrovnik: Where to Stay in 2025

Dubrovnik sits at the southern tip of Croatia, a walled city perched on limestone cliffs above the Adriatic. Its Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, its streets are marble-smooth and car-free, and in summer its cable car lines and city walls fill quickly. Coming here is not just a beach holiday: it is a step into one of the best-preserved medieval urban landscapes in Europe, with ferry connections to the nearby islands of Hvar, Korčula and Mljet adding serious range to any itinerary.

The city is compact but layered. The historic core, the harbour neighbourhood of Gruž, the residential peninsula of Lapad, and the string of coastal villages eastward toward Župa dubrovačka each attract a different type of traveller. Prices spike hard between late June and late August, so where you sleep and when you book both matter. Understanding the geography before you commit to a property is the single most useful thing you can do.

• Old Town (Stari Grad): For travellers who want to fall asleep inside the walls and wake up on the Stradun. Hotels here are scarce and expensive, but the atmosphere is unmatched. Suited to couples and cultural travellers who prioritise location over cost.
• Pile Gate area (Montovjerna): The neighbourhood just west of the main Old Town entrance. Quieter than the walled city, walkable to everything, and noticeably better value. Guest House Nikolina (71 €/night, rated 4.9/5) is a strong option here.
• Lapad: A residential peninsula about 4 km west of the Old Town, connected by frequent city buses. It has its own beach, a shaded promenade, supermarkets and restaurants. Apartments Martha (from 70 €/night, rated 5/5) make it an excellent base for families and longer stays.

• Use the city bus network: Dubrovnik's bus lines (notably lines 4, 5 and 6) connect Gruž, Lapad and Pile Gate reliably and cheaply. If your hotel is on a bus route, a central location is far less critical than it might seem.
• Bring cash and small denominations: Many guesthouses, small apartments and local restaurants in Dubrovnik still prefer cash or charge card fees. Having Croatian euro coins is useful for bus tickets and market purchases.
• Avoid driving inside the city: The Old Town is pedestrian only, and parking near Pile Gate is limited and expensive. If you rent a car for island day trips, park at one of the outer lots and use the bus or walk.
• Visit the city walls early or late: The wall circuit opens at 8 a.m. Entry is timed in peak season. Going at opening or within an hour of closing avoids the worst crowds and gives you the best light for photos.
