In short, Hotels in Vieille ville de Dubrovnik, Dubrovnik

Dubrovnik's Old Town is the most atmospheric and convenient place to stay in the city, putting you steps from the Stradun, the city walls and the main restaurants and bars. It suits couples, culture-focused travellers and first-time visitors who want to be at the heart of things. Light packers and those unbothered by crowds and steep stone steps will enjoy it most.

Staying inside Dubrovnik's Old Town means waking up within the medieval limestone walls that UNESCO recognised in 1979. The neighbourhood is car-free, compact and intensely walkable: the main pedestrian artery, the Stradun, runs straight through the centre and connects the Pile Gate in the west to the Ploce Gate in the east in about five minutes on foot. Accommodation here ranges from small guesthouses tucked into narrow side streets to refurbished stone houses with private terraces, and prices tend to be higher than in outer districts because of the unmatched location.

The Old Town draws significant tourist traffic from late spring through early autumn, so noise, crowds and heat are real considerations for the summer months. Outside peak season the atmosphere shifts noticeably, the alleys quiet down and the city becomes far more pleasant to explore at your own pace. There is no city bus route inside the walls, but the main bus stop at Pile Gate and the ferry port at Gruž are both reachable in roughly 20 to 30 minutes on foot or by taxi. For anyone visiting Dubrovnik for the first time and prioritising access to the historic sights, the Old Town remains the most practical and memorable base in the city.

Frequently asked questions

What hotels are available in Dubrovnik's Old Town and what do they cost?+

The current listed options inside the Old Town cover a range of budgets and styles. Cap Rooms (3 stars) is rated 4.7 out of 5 and starts at around 140 euros per night, making it the highest-rated property in the area. Roko House (3 stars) scores 4.4 out of 5 at approximately 184 euros per night. Rooms Tezoro (3 stars) is available from about 129 euros per night with a 4.1 out of 5 rating, and Rooms Epidaurus (3 stars) starts at roughly 133 euros per night with a 3.9 out of 5 rating. Kaleta House by DuHomes (2 stars) sits at the higher end at around 394 euros per night and holds a 4.2 out of 5 rating, likely reflecting size, styling or a private setting rather than a star classification alone.

Is Dubrovnik's Old Town a good area for families with children?+

The Old Town can work for families but comes with practical caveats. The entire area is built on uneven stone paving and features many staircases, which makes pushchairs and prams genuinely difficult to manoeuvre. There are no cars inside the walls, which is a safety plus, and the compact layout means children can walk between sights without long transfers. However, accommodation units tend to be smaller than hotel rooms in outer neighbourhoods, outdoor dining terraces can be noisy into the evening, and summer heat reflected off the limestone can be intense. Families who are comfortable with these conditions and want immediate access to the city walls walk and the Old Harbour will find the location rewarding.

How do you get in and out of Dubrovnik Old Town without a car?+

The Old Town is pedestrian-only, so all vehicles stop at the perimeter gates. The Pile Gate on the western side is the main entry point and connects directly to the city bus network, with routes running to the Gruž ferry port and the wider city. Taxis and ride-hail services pick up and drop off just outside the gates. Dubrovnik Airport is roughly 20 kilometres from the city centre and is served by airport shuttle buses that stop near Pile Gate, as well as by taxis. The ferry port at Gruž handles connections to the nearby islands and is about a 20 to 25 minute walk from the Old Town or a short bus ride on line 1A.

What are the main downsides of staying in Dubrovnik's Old Town?+

The main drawbacks are crowd levels, noise and price. Between June and August the narrow streets fill quickly with day-trippers arriving from cruise ships and organised tours, and the Stradun in particular can feel congested during midday hours. Stone surfaces retain heat and the lack of shade in some alleys makes afternoon walks uncomfortable in summer. Most accommodation is in converted historic buildings, which can mean thicker walls and charm but also smaller rooms, limited luggage storage and no parking. Rates inside the walls are generally higher than in surrounding neighbourhoods like Lapad or Gruz for equivalent room types. Travellers who prefer quieter surroundings or need easy car access are often better served by staying outside the walls and visiting the Old Town on foot.
