The Old Town can work for families but comes with practical caveats. The entire area is built on uneven stone paving and features many staircases, which makes pushchairs and prams genuinely difficult to manoeuvre. There are no cars inside the walls, which is a safety plus, and the compact layout means children can walk between sights without long transfers. However, accommodation units tend to be smaller than hotel rooms in outer neighbourhoods, outdoor dining terraces can be noisy into the evening, and summer heat reflected off the limestone can be intense. Families who are comfortable with these conditions and want immediate access to the city walls walk and the Old Harbour will find the location rewarding.

The Old Town is pedestrian-only, so all vehicles stop at the perimeter gates. The Pile Gate on the western side is the main entry point and connects directly to the city bus network, with routes running to the Gruž ferry port and the wider city. Taxis and ride-hail services pick up and drop off just outside the gates. Dubrovnik Airport is roughly 20 kilometres from the city centre and is served by airport shuttle buses that stop near Pile Gate, as well as by taxis. The ferry port at Gruž handles connections to the nearby islands and is about a 20 to 25 minute walk from the Old Town or a short bus ride on line 1A.

The main drawbacks are crowd levels, noise and price. Between June and August the narrow streets fill quickly with day-trippers arriving from cruise ships and organised tours, and the Stradun in particular can feel congested during midday hours. Stone surfaces retain heat and the lack of shade in some alleys makes afternoon walks uncomfortable in summer. Most accommodation is in converted historic buildings, which can mean thicker walls and charm but also smaller rooms, limited luggage storage and no parking. Rates inside the walls are generally higher than in surrounding neighbourhoods like Lapad or Gruz for equivalent room types. Travellers who prefer quieter surroundings or need easy car access are often better served by staying outside the walls and visiting the Old Town on foot.
