Why Antwerp Deserves a Proper Stay

Antwerp is not a city you pass through. It is a city you settle into: a port metropolis with a Renaissance cathedral, some of Europe's most respected fashion ateliers, a world-class diamond trade, and a food scene that punches well above Belgium's already high average. The Scheldt river frames its western edge, the medieval Grote Markt anchors its center, and everything in between is walkable, cyclable, and dense with things worth seeing.

What the City Feels Like on the Ground

The pace here is confident rather than frantic. Antwerpenaars take their coffee seriously, their architecture seriously, and their fashion even more so. The city has a compact but distinct neighborhood structure: each quarter has its own character, from the bourgeois calm of the Jewish Quarter to the hip retail energy of the Zuid district. Choosing where to sleep is therefore a real decision, not just a logistical one.

• Old Town (Historisch Centrum): The most central option, built around the Grote Markt and Onze-Lieve-Vrouwekathedraal. Best for first-time visitors who want to walk to everything without planning. The B&B HOTEL Antwerpen Centrum is located here and offers strong value.
• Jewish Quarter (Joods Kwartier): Quiet, residential streets just south of Central Station. This is also the heart of the diamond district. • Station Quarter (Quartier de la Gare): Clustered around the spectacular Antwerp-Centraal railway station, one of the most beautiful train stations in the world. • Het Eilandje (The Little Island): The revitalized port neighborhood north of the center, home to the MAS museum and a growing restaurant scene. Great for design-minded travelers who enjoy waterfront settings and a slightly off-center base.
• Borgerhout / Berchem: Multicultural inner suburbs just east of the ring road. Authentic, affordable, and well connected by tram. Better suited for longer stays than short breaks.

• Arrive by train if you can: Antwerp-Centraal connects to Brussels in under 40 minutes, and to Amsterdam and Paris via direct services. The station itself is worth the trip. Taxis, trams, and the pre-metro (underground tram) spread you across the city from there.
• Book early for trade fair periods: Antwerp hosts major diamond, fashion, and logistics events throughout the year. Hotel availability tightens and prices rise sharply during those windows, especially in spring and autumn.
• Use the Lijn tram network: The city's surface tram and underground pre-metro lines are efficient and cover all main neighborhoods. A day pass is practical if you plan to cross between districts. Walking is viable in the center but the city is larger than it looks on a map.
• Consider a longer stay in the Jewish Quarter: Hotels here offer a quieter environment than the Old Town, with easy pedestrian access to both the station and the cathedral. Several properties offer apartment-style formats, useful for stays of three nights or more.
• Spring and early autumn are the sweet spots: July and August bring crowds and warmth, but Antwerp is genuinely enjoyable from April through June and again in September and October. Winter has its charm too, especially around the Christmas market season, but book well in advance.
