Hotels in Padua: Where to Stay in the City

Padua sits at the heart of the Veneto plain, just 40 kilometers west of Venice and 30 kilometers from Vicenza. That position makes it a genuinely useful base: you can reach Venice in 25 minutes by regional train, yet Padua itself has enough to fill two or three full days without leaving the city limits. Giotto's frescoes in the Scrovegni Chapel, one of the oldest universities in the world (founded 1222), a daily market on Piazza delle Erbe, and the vast Prato della Valle square all reward time spent on the ground.

The city feels lived-in rather than touristy. Students outnumber visitors for most of the year, the cafes are busy with locals, and the aperitivo scene around Via Altinate and Piazza della Frutta is as authentic as it gets in northeast Italy. Prices are noticeably lower than Venice for both accommodation and food, and the quality of cooking, driven by Veneto tradition and a large student population, is consistently high.

• Historic Center (Centro Storico): The best all-round location for first-time visitors. You walk everywhere: Piazza delle Erbe, the Palazzo della Ragione, the university district, and the Basilica di Sant'Antonio are all reachable on foot. Most of the available hotels sit here, ranging from budget-friendly to boutique suites.
• Santo (Basilica Quarter): The neighborhood immediately around the Basilica of Saint Anthony, slightly south of the main market squares. Slightly calmer at night, ideal for pilgrims and those who prefer a quieter street atmosphere while still being central.
• Prato della Valle District: Surrounding one of the largest squares in Europe, this area appeals to travelers who want open space and a residential feel. Good restaurant and bar options, and a short walk from the Orto Botanico, the oldest university botanical garden in the world.
• Train Station Area (Stazione FS): Practical for early departures or day trips to Venice, Vicenza, and Verona. Less atmospheric than the center, but buses, taxis, and the city bike-share all depart from here. A 10-15 minute walk or a short bus ride brings you into the historic core.
• Arcella (North of Center): A working-class residential district that has modernized considerably. Very affordable dining options, honest neighborhood bars, and good transport links. Best suited to budget travelers comfortable moving around by bus or bike.

• Book Scrovegni Chapel slots before your hotel: Entry is timed and limited to small groups. Reservations sell out weeks in advance, especially from March through October. Confirm your chapel slot first, then plan your arrival date around it.
• Avoid bringing a car into the ZTL: Padua's historic center has a restricted traffic zone (Zona a Traffico Limitato). If you drive, check whether your hotel offers parking or arrange a spot outside the ring before you arrive. Fines for unauthorized entry are issued automatically by cameras.
• Best seasons are spring and early autumn: April-June and September-October offer mild temperatures, manageable crowds, and active market days. July and August are hot and see more tourists, though the university vacation means fewer students and a calmer city pace. Winter is cool and sometimes foggy, but hotel rates drop and the Christmas market on Prato della Valle is worth a visit.
• Use the train for day trips, not the bus: Regional trains to Venice (Mestre or Santa Lucia) run multiple times per hour and take 25-30 minutes. Verona is around 50 minutes, Vicenza under 20 minutes. Flixbus and local coaches exist but trains are faster and more reliable for all nearby Veneto cities.
• Padua has a city tourist card (PadovaCard): It covers unlimited bus travel, free or reduced entry to the Scrovegni Chapel (with advance booking), the Musei Civici, and several other sites. If you plan more than one or two paid attractions, the card typically saves money over individual tickets.
