Hotels in Troyes: Where to Stay in the Champagne Capital

Troyes sits at the heart of the Aube department in the Grand Est region, roughly 150 kilometres south-east of Paris. The city is best known for its extraordinary medieval core, a corset-shaped tangle of streets whose outline on a map actually resembles a champagne cork — fitting, given that the region gave the world the Champagne appellation. The Old Town is one of the best-preserved ensembles of timber-frame architecture in France, and wandering it costs nothing.

Beyond the Gothic cathedral and the clusters of Renaissance mansions, Troyes has a quietly lived-in quality that many larger French cities have lost. The covered market, the local brasseries serving andouillette de Troyes, and the thriving outlet shopping village on the southern edge of the city all add layers that reward a stay of two or three nights rather than a single day-trip from Paris.

• Vieille Ville (Old Town): The obvious first choice for first-time visitors. Cobbled lanes, the Cathedral of Saint-Pierre-et-Saint-Paul, and a dense concentration of restaurants and wine bars. Parking can be tight; arriving by train and walking is easier.
• City Centre (around Place du Maréchal Foch): Slightly more modern streetscape just outside the medieval core, with better parking access and straightforward connections to the train station. Good for travellers who want convenience without paying Old Town premiums.
• Saint-Nizier / Canal Quarter: The quieter eastern fringe of the historic area, running along the canals that once fed Troyes' textile industry. Calmer in the evenings, pleasant for a morning walk, and still within ten minutes on foot of the main sights.
• Marques Avenue / McArthurGlen District (southern suburbs): Worth knowing if outlet shopping is part of the plan. This area is not a tourist neighbourhood in itself, but several hotels cluster nearby and offer good rates for road-trippers.
• Periphery and ring-road zone: Suited to business travellers or those arriving by car. Budget hotel brands are well represented here. Distances to the centre are short by car (ten to fifteen minutes) but walking is not realistic.

• Take the train from Paris: Troyes is served by direct trains from Paris Gare de l'Est (roughly 1h30). The station sits about a ten-minute walk from the Old Town, which makes a car genuinely unnecessary if you are here for sightseeing.
• Visit in late spring or early autumn: May to June and September to October offer the most comfortable temperatures for walking the Old Town, fewer crowds than summer, and better hotel availability. The Christmas market (December) is popular and fills hotels quickly.
• Book early for Troyes en Lumières: The city's summer sound-and-light projections on the cathedral facade draw large crowds on specific evenings. Hotels near the Old Town sell out weeks in advance on those dates.
• Check whether your hotel includes parking: On-street parking in the Vieille Ville is restricted, and some historic hotels do not have private lots. Several city-centre and peripheral hotels include parking in the rate, which matters if you are driving from the champagne vineyards.
• Combine with a Champagne route day trip: The Côte des Bar vineyards (Aube's own Champagne producers) begin just south and east of the city. A rental car for one day is enough to visit two or three independent houses; book it from Troyes city centre rather than the airport to save money.
