Where Deauville deals in casino gloss and horse-racing prestige, Trouville has kept its working trawlers, its fish market open every morning on the boardwalk, and its rows of colourful villas climbing the hillside. Painters from Boudin to Monet came here for the light, and that luminous quality of the Normandy sky above a wide sandy beach still draws visitors who want something more genuine than a resort postcard.

The town is small enough to cross in fifteen minutes on foot, which means your choice of hotel is less about location and more about the experience you want: thalassotherapy and a spa facing the sea, a character-filled three-star in the centre steps from the best crêperies and fishmongers, or a quiet retreat on the green hillside. The Côte Fleurie season peaks in July and August, but Trouville works beautifully in May, June and September, when prices ease and the boardwalk belongs to you.

• The seafront and boardwalk (Les Planches): ideal for first-time visitors and families who want the beach immediately outside the door, morning runs on the wooden boardwalk, and the festival atmosphere in summer. Hotels here sit between the casino and the thalasso centre.
