Hotels in Cabourg: Where to Stay in This Norman Seaside Town

Cabourg sits on the Calvados coast of Normandy, about 240 km west of Paris, at the mouth of the Dives river. Its radiating street plan, built in the mid-19th century, fans out from the Grand Hôtel in perfect semicircles toward the pine-backed hinterland, giving the town an almost theatrical geometry. The seafront promenade stretches for kilometres and remains one of the most elegant in northern France, wide enough for cyclists and walkers to coexist comfortably even in summer.

The town earned literary fame as the inspiration for Balbec in Marcel Proust's 'In Search of Lost Time', and that Proustian atmosphere, refined without being fussy, still shapes the mood here. Expect cream-coloured villas with turrets, flower-filled gardens, and a beach of fine sand that shelves gently into the Channel. Outside of the July-August peak, Cabourg is surprisingly peaceful, and a long weekend here in May, June or September can feel like a private discovery.

• Grand Plage and Promenade Marcel Proust: The seafront strip is where the landmark hotels sit directly facing the beach. Ideal for guests who want to step onto the sand immediately and stay in the historic heart of the resort. The most animated area in summer, with beach clubs and restaurants within walking distance.
• Town Centre and Casino Gardens: The semicircular streets radiating from the Casino host smaller hotels, rental residences and villa-style guesthouses. A good choice for those who prefer a slightly calmer base while remaining a five-minute walk from the beach.
• Residential Quarters toward Dives-sur-Mer: The western edges of Cabourg blend into the older port town of Dives-sur-Mer, where you find more budget-friendly accommodation and a more authentic local atmosphere away from the tourist flow.
• Les Dunes Area (north of town): Low-rise residential streets sheltered by dunes and pine trees, suited to families and those renting apartments or smaller guesthouses looking for greenery alongside the coast.
• Deauville (nearby, across the estuary): Technically a separate commune, Deauville is reachable in under 30 minutes by road and offers its own concentration of luxury hotels, including the iconic Hôtel Barrière Le Normandy. A practical option if you want to combine the two resorts or if Cabourg's own hotels are fully booked.

• Arrive by car if possible: Cabourg has no train station. The nearest rail connection is Trouville-Deauville, about 25 km away, from which you will need a taxi or rental car to reach the resort. Driving from Paris via the A13 motorway takes around two and a half hours depending on traffic.
• Book well in advance for July and August: Cabourg is one of the most sought-after short-break destinations in Normandy, and rooms at the sea-facing hotels fill up months ahead for peak summer weekends. Shoulder months (May, June, September) offer better availability and noticeably lower prices at most properties.
• Pack for changeable weather: Even in summer, the Normandy coast sees Atlantic weather fronts roll in quickly. A light waterproof jacket is useful year-round, and sea temperatures rarely exceed 19 or 20 degrees even in August, so a wetsuit helps if you plan to swim for any length of time.
• Walk or cycle the promenade: Cabourg is a genuinely walkable town within its own boundaries. Bike hire is available locally and the flat coastal path makes cycling between the beach, the Casino gardens and the marina at Dives-sur-Mer easy and pleasant.
• Consider thalassotherapy packages: Several hotels in Cabourg, including Thalazur Cabourg and the Mercure, offer seawater spa (thalasso) treatments that combine well with a two or three night stay.
