Canet-en-Roussillon sits on the Vermilion Coast in the Pyrénées-Orientales, roughly 12 kilometres east of Perpignan. It is a genuine seaside town rather than a resort built from scratch: a working marina, a long sandy beach stretching several kilometres, a weekly market, and a flamingo lagoon (the Étang de Canet) that sits right behind the dunes. The town splits naturally into two poles. The inland village, with its medieval church and shaded squares, is where permanent residents live year-round. Canet-Plage, the seaside extension, is where most visitors stay: a lively strip of promenade, seafood restaurants, surf shops and apartment blocks facing the sea. In high summer the population swells dramatically, so booking ahead is not optional. Outside July and August the pace slows considerably, prices drop, and the light on the lagoon becomes something photographers travel specifically to capture.

• Canet-Plage (La Jetée / central seafront): The liveliest part of town, directly on the beach. Best for first-time visitors, families and anyone who wants restaurants, ice-cream stalls and the sea all within a short walk. • Getting from Perpignan: The D617 road connects Perpignan to Canet in roughly 20 minutes by car. A bus service (line 8 operated by Sankéo) links Perpignan city centre and Perpignan train station to Canet-Plage. Taxis and ride-shares are also reliable for the airport transfer.
• The lagoon is worth a morning: The Étang de Canet-Saint-Nazaire is a protected nature reserve bordering the beach. Flamingos are present most of the year; early mornings before the beach crowds arrive are the best time for wildlife watching.
• Wind awareness: The Tramontane (a strong, dry north-westerly wind) can blow hard across Roussillon, sometimes for several days. It keeps the air clear and the sea a vivid blue, but it can make beach days uncomfortable. Checking forecasts before planning open-air activities is a practical habit in this part of the Languedoc.
