Hotels in Martigues: Where to Stay in the Venice of Provence

Martigues sits at the western edge of the Étang de Berre lagoon, about 40 kilometres northwest of Marseille, where a network of canals connects the lagoon to the Golfe de Fos. The town earned its nickname, the Venice of Provence, from the colourful fishing boats moored beneath the Miroir aux Oiseaux, a stretch of canal in the Ferrières quarter that has attracted painters since the late 19th century. It is not a tourist theme park: it is a working industrial harbour town with a genuine Provençal core, and that contrast gives it real character.

Staying here puts you within easy reach of the Camargue wetlands, the Calanques national park, and the cities of Marseille and Aix-en-Provence, all reachable in under an hour by road. The local market, the medieval streets of l'Île quarter, and the seafood restaurants along the quays reward slow exploration on foot. Hotel supply is modest, which keeps prices reasonable and the atmosphere free of mass tourism.

• L'Île and Ferrières (historic centre): The most atmospheric part of Martigues, built on islands separated by canals. Ideal for first-time visitors who want to walk to the Miroir aux Oiseaux, the church of Santa Maria, and the main quayside restaurants without needing a car for daily sightseeing.
• Jonquières: The northernmost of the three historic quarters, home to the covered market and a lively local commercial street. A good base if you want everyday amenities on your doorstep alongside easy access to the canal scenery.
• Town outskirts and Route de la Mer axis: The area around the main road corridors just outside the historic core holds several chain hotels with parking. Practical for drivers, and still only a short ride or a 15-to-20-minute walk from the waterfront.
• Saint-Mitre-les-Remparts (4 km north): A small walled village close to the Étang de Berre. Quieter and more rural, suited to travellers with a car who prefer village calm over urban convenience and want to explore the lagoon edge at their own pace.
• Near Fos-sur-Mer and the Golfe de Fos: For visitors whose main purpose is business at the industrial port complex rather than tourism, the western approaches to Martigues offer straightforward road access to the port zone while still giving a short drive into the town for evenings.

• Bring a car or plan bus connections carefully: Martigues has bus links to Marseille (line operated by Ulysse/Envia) and a local network, but frequencies outside peak hours can be low. A car gives you freedom to reach the Calanques, the Camargue edge, and Aix-en-Provence on day trips without depending on timetables.
• Book for July and August well in advance: The town fills up during summer because of its beach access at La Couronne (about 8 km south) and its position between Marseille and the Camargue. Hotel prices rise and availability shrinks from mid-June onward.
• Spring and early autumn are the sweet spots: April to early June and September to October bring mild temperatures, fewer crowds, and better rates. The mistral wind is stronger in spring but the light is exceptional for photography around the canals.
• Parking matters in the historic centre: The island quarters have narrow streets and limited parking. If you are driving, confirm whether your hotel has a car park before arrival. Several chain hotels on the outskirts include free parking, which removes daily stress in a town where central spaces fill quickly in summer.
• Use Martigues as a base, not just a stopover: The town is often treated as a one-night stop between Marseille and Arles, but two or three nights allow you to visit the Musée Ziem (dedicated to the painters who worked here), reach the calanques at Carro and La Couronne by morning, and still have a relaxed evening along the quays.
