Accommodation in Calais splits naturally between two poles: the city centre, where daily life happens and most sights are walkable, and the Fréthun corridor near the Eurotunnel terminal, which is purely practical but very convenient for very early or very late crossings. Prices are generally moderate compared to Paris or the Côte d'Azur, and parking is rarely a problem, which is a genuine advantage for road-trip travellers loading a car onto Le Shuttle.

• Centre-ville (City Centre): Best for first-time visitors and those who want to actually see Calais. The Place d'Armes, the Rodin sculpture of the Burghers of Calais, and the main restaurants are all walkable. • Avoid late July and August if you want quiet: The peak summer period brings heavy cross-Channel traffic, higher prices, and longer queues at both the ferry and Eurotunnel terminals. Late May, June, and September offer good weather with noticeably less congestion.
• Getting between the centre and the terminal: The Eurotunnel terminal at Coquelles is about 6 kilometres from the city centre. A taxi takes roughly 10 minutes. There is no direct shuttle bus, so if you are a foot passenger using Eurostar (which departs from nearby Lille, not Calais), factor in an extra transfer.
• The train station (Calais-Ville) connects to Lille in about 1 hour: From Lille, high-speed trains reach Paris in about 1 hour. If you are combining Calais with a broader French trip, this rail link is more useful than it might first appear. HECO Calais Centre is directly adjacent to the station.
