• Plateau de Ma Campagne / City Centre slopes: The transition zone between the plateau and the lower town. Calmer than the old town core but still walkable to the centre, with good local bakeries and everyday amenities.
• Basseau / Grand Font (lower town, river level): Closer to the Charente River and the train station area. More residential, popular with locals, and a short bus or bike ride up to the old town. Useful if you need quick rail access.
• Saint-Cybard / Rive Droite: Across the river on the right bank. Quieter and more suburban, with some industrial heritage sites. Better suited to road-trippers with a car than to those relying on foot.
• Champniers (north, 7 to 8 km): A roadside commercial zone along the N10. Not walkable to the old town, but practical for drivers passing through and noticeably cheaper. Good if you need parking and an early departure.

Book several weeks ahead for a standard weekend, and at least three to four months ahead if your dates overlap with the Festival de la Bande Dessinée (usually the last weekend of January, extending to Monday).
• Transport within the city: The plateau is pedestrian-friendly but reaching it from the lower town requires either a walk up steep streets or the free funicular (ascenseur urbain) linking the station area to the old town. Local STGA buses cover the wider urban area. A car is only necessary if you plan to explore the Charente countryside.
• Arriving by train: Angoulême is on the Paris-Bordeaux TGV axis, making it very accessible without a car. The station sits at the foot of the hill; the funicular or a 10-minute uphill walk brings you to the centre.
• Best seasons to visit: Spring (April to June) and early autumn (September to October) offer mild weather, fewer crowds and full access to outdoor rampart walks and terrace dining. Summer is warm and pleasant. January is cold but electric during the comics festival, though prices and demand spike sharply that week.
• Driving and parking: If you arrive by car, several free or low-cost car parks sit at the edge of the plateau (notably near the ramparts on the north and west sides). Parking inside the old town core is limited and often paid.
