The island is small enough (roughly 73 square kilometres) that no location feels truly remote, but the differences between areas are real. The western cliff villages face the caldera and the famous sunset. The eastern coast holds the black and red volcanic beaches. The inland settlements sit on higher ground, quieter, cooler in summer, and far less crowded. Knowing these distinctions before you book will save you both money and frustration.

• Fira (Thira): The island's capital and its busiest hub. Best for travelers who want restaurants, shops, bars and caldera views within walking distance. The Kavalari Hotel (Adults Only) sits here at 122 EUR per night, offering a central, convenient base.

Renting an ATV or car gives you flexibility, especially if you are staying in Kamari, Perissa or Pyrgos. Taxis from Fira can be scarce in high season.
• Airport and port transfers: Santorini Airport (JTR) is close to Kamari, roughly 5 kilometres from Fira. Taxis and pre-booked transfers are the most reliable options. The main port at Athinios is about 10 kilometres south of Fira; buses and taxis meet most ferries, but confirm timing if arriving late.
• Caldera-view rooms carry a premium: If a direct caldera or sunset view is your priority, budget accordingly. If it is not essential, inland or eastern-coast hotels like those in Pyrgos, Megalochori or Perissa deliver strong quality and comfort at noticeably lower prices.
