Saint-Jean-de-Luz sits at the southern edge of the Basque Country, wedged between the Pyrenees and the Atlantic, just 20 kilometers north of the Spanish border at Hendaye. It is not a resort town that was built for tourism; it is a working fishing port that happens to have one of the most sheltered, swimmable bays on the entire French Atlantic coast. That combination gives it a grounded, authentic character that the bigger neighbor Biarritz sometimes lacks.

The town is compact and largely walkable. The covered market, the baroque Saint-Jean-Baptiste church where Louis XIV married Marie-Thérèse of Spain in 1660, the painted wooden facades of the Basque houses, the quayside where tuna boats still unload: all of it sits within a short stroll. Choosing where to stay here is less about neighborhoods in the big-city sense and more about deciding how close you want to be to the water, the market, or the peace and quiet of the surrounding hills.

• Centre-ville (town center): The obvious base for most visitors. The pedestrian streets, the main beach (Grande Plage), the port, and the market are all within walking distance. Hotels here range from boutique three-stars to full thalassotherapy five-stars. Ideal for first-timers and anyone without a car.
• Ciboure (across the port): Separated from Saint-Jean-de-Luz only by a small bridge over the Nivelle river, Ciboure has a more local, quieter feel. It is where composer Maurice Ravel was born. A good pick if you want to be a 10-minute walk from everything but away from the summer bustle.
• Socoa and the coastal path: The far side of the bay, anchored by a small fort and a surf beach. Socoa suits travelers who prioritize sunsets, hiking the coastal path (Sentier du Littoral), and a village-within-a-village atmosphere.
• Urrugne and the inland hills: A short drive from the coast, Urrugne and the surrounding Basque foothills attract hikers heading toward the Rhune mountain or pilgrims on the Camino de Santiago (GR65). Better with a car, very peaceful.
• Anglet and Biarritz corridor (16 km north): If rates in Saint-Jean-de-Luz are high in peak season, properties like the Kyriad Anglet-Biarritz offer a budget-friendlier entry point. You will need a car or the ATCRB regional bus to reach Saint-Jean-de-Luz, but the journey takes roughly 30 minutes.

• Book early for July and August: The town fills up fast during the summer sardine and tuna festivals, the Fetes de la Saint-Jean, and the general peak beach season. Properties in the Centre-ville can sell out weeks in advance; booking two to three months ahead is sensible.
• Traveling without a car: The centre of Saint-Jean-de-Luz is best explored on foot. The ATCRB bus network connects the town to Biarritz and Bayonne, and the SNCF train station (Saint-Jean-de-Luz Ciboure) has direct TGV connections to Bordeaux and Paris. A car is only necessary if you plan day trips into the Basque hinterland or Spain.
• Shoulder season is excellent value: May, June, and September offer warm temperatures (often 20 to 25 degrees Celsius), a calm sea, and noticeably lower hotel rates. The market, restaurants, and most attractions stay fully open.
• Thalassotherapy stays: Several hotels in town (including the Grand Hotel Spa and Thalazur) are built around seawater therapy programs. If that is your goal, check whether the spa rate is included or separate, as package deals can represent better value than booking treatments individually.
• Parking in summer: If you arrive by car, look for hotels that include private parking or are close to the paying car parks on the outskirts of the pedestrian zone. Street parking near the beach in July and August is very limited.
