Toledo sits on a granite hill encircled almost entirely by the Tagus River, roughly 70 km south of Madrid. It was once the imperial capital of Spain and served as a meeting point for Christian, Muslim, and Jewish cultures for centuries. That layered history is still physically present: you walk between a medieval synagogue, a Moorish mosque-turned-church, and a Gothic cathedral within the space of a few hundred meters. The UNESCO World Heritage designation is not ceremonial here; the entire old city is essentially an open-air museum with residents still living inside it.

Staying inside or right next to the Casco Histórico makes a genuine difference. Toledo's main monuments are concentrated and best explored on foot, but the streets are steep, narrow, and traffic-restricted. Most visitors arrive as a day trip from Madrid, which means the city empties out in the late afternoon and takes on a completely different, calmer atmosphere after 6 p.m. Staying overnight lets you experience that quieter side, including the famously dramatic views of the illuminated skyline reflected in the Tagus after dark.

• Getting from Madrid: High-speed Renfe trains (AVANT) run from Madrid Atocha to Toledo in about 33 minutes. It is one of the most efficient rail connections in Spain. The Toledo train station is outside the old city, but the escalators and local buses cover the gap.
• Best season to visit: Spring (April to June) and autumn (September to October) offer mild temperatures and manageable crowds. July and August are hot (often above 35°C) and very busy. Winter is cold but uncrowded, and the city receives fewer tourists, which has its own appeal.
• Comfortable shoes are non-negotiable: The cobblestone streets inside the Casco Histórico are uneven and often wet from morning cleaning. Even a short walk to the Alcázar involves meaningful elevation changes. Pack accordingly before you go.
