In short, Where to stay in Positano?

Positano is a small, vertical village where location matters enormously. Staying near Spiaggia Grande puts you at the social heart of the town, while Fornillo offers a quieter atmosphere just a short walk away. If budget is a priority, the hillside hamlet of Montepertuso or nearby coastal towns give you a genuine base at a fraction of the price.

Positano clings to a steep cliff face above the Tyrrhenian Sea, a cascade of pastel houses, bougainvillea and ceramic-tiled domes that has made it one of the most photographed villages in Europe. What photographs cannot convey is the physical reality of the place: nearly every journey here involves steps, narrow lanes and the near-total absence of flat ground. Choosing where to stay is therefore less about comfort tiers and more about how much you want to walk, climb and carry.

The village is compact enough to cover on foot, but its vertical layout means a hotel two streets above the beach can feel a world apart from one at sea level. High season (June to August) brings intense crowds and peak prices, while May, September and early October offer the same scenery with softer light, cooler temperatures and more breathing room. Positano has no train station, so all arrivals come by ferry, bus or car along the winding SS163 coastal road.

Which area to stay in Positano?

  • Spiaggia Grande area: The animated centre of Positano, lined with restaurants, boutiques and direct beach access. Ideal for first-time visitors who want to be immersed in the full Positano experience without long walks. Hotels here command premium prices and book out months in advance.
  • Fornillo: A five-minute walk west of Spiaggia Grande along a scenic coastal path, Fornillo has its own small pebble beach and a noticeably calmer pace. Fewer souvenir shops, more local bars. A good choice for couples who want proximity to the action but prefer quieter mornings.
  • Upper village (Via Cristoforo Colombo and surroundings): The residential tiers rising above the beach offer some of the best panoramic views in Positano. Expect serious stair-climbing to reach the shore, but also fresher air and smaller crowds at your doorstep.
  • Montepertuso: A hillside village sitting roughly 350 metres above Positano, connected by local bus. Genuinely local atmosphere, cooler summer temperatures and significantly lower prices. Best for travellers who have already done Positano once and want an authentic, less theatrical experience.
  • Nearby towns (Praiano, Meta di Sorrento): For visitors who want to explore the wider Amalfi Coast, staying in a town within 10 to 15 km of Positano can cut accommodation costs considerably while still allowing day trips by ferry or SITA bus. The trade-off is losing the immediate magic of waking up inside the village itself.

Good to know

  • Book transport before you book a hotel: The SITA bus connects Positano to Amalfi and Sorrento, but it runs on a fixed timetable and fills quickly in summer. Ferries are faster and more scenic for reaching Amalfi, Ravello or Capri. If you plan to arrive by car, confirm whether your hotel has a parking arrangement or a porter service for luggage, as driving into the lower village is restricted.
  • Understand the stair factor before confirming your room: Most Positano hotels quote the walking distance to the beach in minutes, but those minutes involve uneven stone steps, often with luggage. Read recent guest reviews specifically for mobility comments, and ask the hotel directly how many steps separate your room from the nearest road access.
  • Travel in shoulder season if possible: May and September offer water temperatures still warm enough for swimming, far fewer crowds on the beach and prices that can drop meaningfully compared to July and August. Many smaller properties close between November and March.
  • Arrive early in the day: Positano is at its most magical in the morning before the day-trippers arrive on the first ferries. If your itinerary allows, check in early or store luggage and explore the lanes before 10 a.m.
  • Budget realistically for meals and extras: The village centre caters primarily to tourists, and restaurant prices reflect that. Walking five minutes toward Fornillo or uphill toward the bus stop typically brings menus back to more reasonable territory. Grocery options are limited, so self-catering stays require planning.

What to know about hotels in Positano?

What is the best area to stay in Positano?+

For most visitors, the area around Spiaggia Grande is the most convenient base: you are within a few minutes of the beach, the main restaurants and the ferry dock. If you prefer a quieter setting, the Fornillo side of the village is a short walk away and has its own beach. Travellers on tighter budgets or returning visitors often enjoy Montepertuso, the hillside hamlet above the village, which is served by a local bus.

When is the best time to visit Positano?+

Late May, early June and September are widely considered the ideal windows. The sea is warm, the crowds are manageable and the light is excellent for photography. July and August are the busiest and most expensive months, with the village and beaches at full capacity. Most hotels and restaurants close from late October or November through to Easter.

How do I get from Naples or the airport to Positano?+

From Naples Capodichino Airport, the most practical route is a private transfer or the Curreri shuttle bus to Sorrento, followed by a SITA bus or ferry along the Amalfi Coast to Positano. The total journey takes roughly two to three hours depending on traffic and connections. In summer, the coastal road can experience significant delays, so the ferry from Sorrento is often faster and more comfortable.

What is the average cost of a hotel in Positano?+

Positano is one of the most expensive villages on the Italian coast. Based on currently available options, nightly rates range from around 282 euros for a self-catering apartment in Montepertuso to over 1,500 euros for a sea-view room at a top-rated hotel steps from Spiaggia Grande. Mid-range four-star hotels close to the main beach typically start around 700 euros per night in high season.

Is Positano suitable for visitors with limited mobility?+

Positano is a challenging destination for anyone with limited mobility. The entire village is built on a steep hillside, and the vast majority of paths between streets, hotels and the beach involve stone steps. There is no lift or cable car connecting the upper and lower parts of the village. Before booking, it is strongly advisable to contact your hotel directly to understand exactly how accessible the property and its surroundings are.
