Cagliari is Sardinia's capital and its most layered city: a port town with Roman ruins, a Phoenician-era hilltop citadel, and one of the longest urban beaches in the Mediterranean at Poetto. It is compact enough to explore largely on foot, yet varied enough that choosing the right neighbourhood genuinely changes the character of your stay.

The city sits on the southern tip of Sardinia, overlooking a vast lagoon system that turns pink with flamingos in autumn and spring. The old town climbs steeply from the harbour through the bohemian Villanova and Stampace districts up to Castello, where the views over the Gulf of Angels stop most visitors in their tracks. Summers are hot and dry, winters mild, and the shoulder seasons (April to June, September to October) offer the best balance of weather, crowds, and price.

Which area to stay in Cagliari?

  • Marina (Quartiere della Marina): The historic harbour district and the most hotel-dense area of Cagliari. Narrow medieval streets open onto busy squares, fish restaurants line every block, and the waterfront promenade is minutes away on foot. Ideal for first-time visitors who want everything within reach.
  • Castello: The walled hilltop citadel is the oldest and most dramatic part of the city. Staying here means waking up inside walls that date back to the Pisan era, with sweeping sea views and far fewer tourists after dark. Accommodation options are limited but the experience is unique.
  • Stampace: A genuinely residential district just west of the centre, full of Baroque churches, local cafes, and daily markets. Quieter than Marina, it rewards visitors who want a less performative side of Cagliari.
  • Villanova: The artisan quarter on the eastern flank of Castello, known for its street art, independent shops, and a younger crowd. A good base for longer stays.
  • Poetto / Quartiere del Margine Rosso: The beachfront area about 5 km from the centre, suited to travellers who prioritise beach access over sightseeing. Requires a bus or car to reach the old town, but the setting along the 8 km sandy strip is exceptional.
  • Bonaria: A calm, mainly residential neighbourhood between the city centre and Poetto, sitting near the basilica of the same name. A practical, unhurried alternative for those with a car.

Good to know

  • Book early for summer: Cagliari's high season runs from late June through August. Hotel rates and availability tighten significantly from July onwards, particularly for well-rated properties in the Marina quarter. Shoulder season (May or September) delivers similar weather with noticeably better value.
  • Get around on foot and by bus: The city centre is walkable, and the CTM bus network covers Poetto beach and the airport efficiently. Taxis are metered and reliable but less necessary unless you are carrying luggage or arriving late.
  • Airport to centre is straightforward: Cagliari Elmas Airport (CAG) is roughly 6 km from the city. The dedicated Arst shuttle bus runs regularly and connects directly to the main Piazza Matteotti terminal in around 15 minutes. Taxis are also plentiful at the arrivals exit.
  • Hire a car only if you plan to explore the island: Within Cagliari itself, a car is more hindrance than help. Parking in the centre is limited and paid. However, if you want to reach beaches like Chia, Villasimius, or the Sulcis region, renting one from day two or three makes sense.
  • Carry cash for markets and smaller restaurants: Card payments are widely accepted in hotels and most restaurants, but the daily fish market (Mercato di San Benedetto) and some neighbourhood trattorias still prefer cash. An ATM near Piazza Yenne is convenient and centrally located.

What to know about hotels in Cagliari?

What is the best area to stay in Cagliari for first-time visitors?+

The Marina quarter is the most practical choice for a first visit. It keeps you within easy walking distance of the port, the old town, the main shopping streets, and several of Cagliari's best seafood restaurants. Hotels like the Regina Margherita Hotel (169 €/night, 4.6/5) and Miramare Cagliari Hotel Museo (272 €/night, 4.2/5) are both located here.

When is the best time of year to visit Cagliari?+

May, June, and September are the sweet spots: temperatures are warm enough for the beach (20 to 28°C), the city is lively but not overwhelmed, and hotel rates are lower than in July and August. Spring also brings the spectacle of flamingos in the nearby Molentargius lagoon in large numbers.

What is the average cost of a hotel night in Cagliari?+

Based on available properties, budget-friendly options such as Sardinia Domus start at 96 €/night, mid-range four-star hotels cluster around 161 to 169 €/night, and luxury five-star addresses like Hotel Palazzo Doglio reach 340 €/night. Prices rise sharply in July and August.

How do you get from Cagliari Elmas Airport to the city centre?+

The Arst airport shuttle bus connects the terminal to Piazza Matteotti in the city centre in approximately 15 minutes, with frequent departures throughout the day. A metered taxi covers the same route in a similar time and costs more but is convenient for late arrivals or heavy luggage.

Is Cagliari safe to walk around at night?+

Yes, Cagliari is considered one of the safer Italian cities for evening walks. The Marina and Stampace districts are animated with locals and visitors well into the night, particularly in summer. Standard urban awareness applies, especially in very quiet back streets near the port late at night.
